How to Check in With Family & Friends
How to Check in With Family & Friends
05 Nov 2021

Checking in on friends and family is a great way to connect. It also opens a gateway for those who are struggling to find help and also improve their mental health.

But the reality is that sometimes we may not know where to start, especially when we are faced with our own issues. Here is a checklist on how to check in on loved ones and yourself as a form of selfcare.

Schedule a catch-up session:

COVID has changed the way we interact with loved ones. You can choose to schedule a catch-up session with loved ones that is flexible for everyone to help everyone touch base once a week or month. This can be done through video calls, phone calls, or a simple text to check how they are doing. If you do plan on visiting a loved one, remember to stick to the COVID-19 guidelines to make your visit a safe and enjoyable one.

Bonding activity

Actions do speak louder than words at times. Choosing the simple act of spending time together can be a good mood booster and a great way to allow a person to speak up on how they are doing without forcing it. You can choose to do stress-free activities together to help you unwind or partake in a cooking experience that will help you connect. The aim is not to be distracted but to find ways to meaningfully spend time with each other.

Thoughtful questions to ask regarding how they are doing

Sometimes we may not always find the right words to ask how someone is really doing. It also may be the case of not knowing what to ask. It is normal to feel this way. Here are some handy questions that you can use with loved ones and on yourself for a self-check:

How are you feeling today?

How have you been sleeping?

What is keeping you going right now?

Would you like to talk about it? (If they are bothered by something)

Is there something you need help with at this moment?

It's all about listening. Sometimes a solution is not needed. However, if there are tell-tale symptoms of challenges that are impacting their mental health it is important to reach out by seeking medical help. Knowing how to support someone with a mental health problem can also be beneficial.

Small acts of kindness

Be kind to yourself. Be kind to others. During a time where so many people battle with personal problems, spreading a little kindness goes a long way. Indulge in self-care by giving yourself time to rest, participating in something that makes you happy and going outside for a breath of fresh air.

Tapping into healthy habits that can change someone's moods are beneficial, especially when it comes to extending this outside of yourself to loved ones. Doing things such as cooking a meal for them, sharing something that reminds you of them or something funny can go a long way. Take time to slow down and tap into random acts of kindness.
