Move over couples, Valentine's Day has shown an increasing number of single people celebrating this day. You will also be surprised to find out that more people prefer an experience on the day than a gift. Here are a few surprising statistics when it comes to the romantic day that is celebrated worldwide.

Young blood & Young love

Younger age groups are more likely to celebrate Valentine’s day. Research by Fortune has revealed that 64% of people between the ages of 25 and 34 were most likely to celebrate Valentine’s day. This age group was followed by people aged 18-24 at 58.6%, closely matched by people aged 35-44 years old. 

 

It is most enjoyed when you have money

While we all like to enjoy the sentiments that come with setting up a romantic dinner at home or D.I.Y gifts for our significant other, data has revealed that we enjoy Valentine's day more when we have money. It is the biggest spending season, after Christmas, with a whopping $18.2 billion (R272 billion) being spent on this day in the United States alone.

 

Singles are embracing Galentine’s Day

Valentine's day is known as a day for couples to celebrate their love for each other, but there has been a significant shift in single people participating more with their other single friends, family, colleagues, and their pets. As many as 27% of people have bought a Valentine's day gift for their pet, followed by 11.5% of people who bought a gift for themselves.

 

Candy remains the top gift

There are many gift ideas when it comes to splurging on your loved one. However, when it comes to the most popular gift, candy reigns supreme. Jewellery takes a surprising dip with a decrease of 3% in sales and candy purchases at 52%, with chocolate being the most bought gift.

 

Most people prefer an experience over a gift

There have been many changes that have come with celebrating this special occasion. As many as 40% of people prefer to receive gifts of experiences than physical items. This number increase to 44% when it comes to people aged 24- and 35-years. Start planning your next romantic getaway to make it a bit more special.

 

40% of couples pop the important question on this day

Prepare yourself if you have been in a long-term relationship. There has been a recorded 40% of people who get engaged on this day. Carefully look out for the tell-tale signs or play it by ear to be surprised.
