How You Can Improve Your BMI
How You Can Improve Your BMI
22 Apr 2021

Being underweight or overweight can affect your overall health. A common mistake most of us make is looking at our physical appearance to determine if we are healthy or not, but it is your BMI that can give a more accurate account of whether your weight is suitable for your age and height.

But how can you improve your BMI in a healthy way?

Start with a BMI calculator

Body Mass Index (BMI) is a more accurate way to assess whether your weight is healthy for your height and gender. Using a BMI calculator can give you the results in seconds so that you know where to start. Always remember that healthy weight gain or loss will differ from person to person. This means that while it might be healthy for one person to have a weight loss of 10 kg to be healthy, it could be unhealthy for you and vice versa when it comes to gaining weight.

Set a realistic target

Knowing where you currently stand can help determine which route to start. Take note of the food you eat. Does it consist of more calories & trans fats? Are you striking a healthy balance between your fruits, vegetables, and starch? How often are you active? These are some of the questions that you need to keep in mind to help you understand where you are and what needs to be changed. Make sure that you consult a dietician and your doctor before beginning a diet that will have a significant impact on your health. It will help you set a realistic target, but through it all, remember to celebrate the small wins.

Change your diet

It's time to get into nutrient-rich foods that can aid your weight loss or weight gain goal. Always remember that your diet forms 80% of results, and the best way to get there in a healthy fashion is to be conscious of what you put in your body. Sticking to seasonal foods can make starting a healthy diet affordable. Make sure that you plan your meals in advance to avoid those moments where it is easier to order take-out instead of cooking yourself. Staying hydrated is also a great way to keep you full and help with the digestive process.

Let’s get physical

Remember that maintaining a healthy BMI is not a sprint but a marathon. A common mistake is to rush the process and take on more than what our bodies can handle at the time. Apps such as the Nike Training App or Adidas Training App are some of the ways in which you can pace yourself by starting with a beginner level of fitness and working your way to advanced.

You will have to be honest with yourself and how much time you have to do each activity to not feel overwhelmed. For example, if you are just starting out, aim to get 15 to 30 minutes of exercise in. Always remember to listen to your body and adjust accordingly. The aim is to be consistent until your body is used to it.
