5 Ways You Can Take Care of Your Mental Health
5 Ways You Can Take Care of Your Mental Health
21 Oct 2021

Your mental health is crucial to anyone's health. While there are mental health illnesses that require medical care, there are some small practices that you can start introducing to your daily routine as a form of self-care that will take care of you and your mental health.

Know when to take a break

Give yourself some 'me time', no matter how small or short the time spent on it is. Remember to slow down. To say no. Taking a break can come in many forms, so long as it is something that gives you a breather.  For some, it is a change of scenery. For others, it is the simple act of making a cup of tea and sitting in silence. Find a healthy way to destress, especially for those moments where it feels like things are spiralling out of control.

Get plenty of sleep

Studies have revealed that sleep can impact our overall mood, physical and mental health. The less we get the more these aspects of our health become affected. Being able to get 6-8 hours of sleep is important to adults. Find out how you can improve your sleep patterns here

Surround yourself with positive things

Negative emotions can cause a domino effect, especially when we surround ourselves with people or situations that feed into it. It can be difficult to shift our focus when we find ourselves in stressful situations. However, surrounding ourselves with things and people who make us feel positive can be beneficial. Achieving this can also be done through mood-enhancing activities such as helping others or planning a trip to help break the negative cycle.

Eat well

Eating a healthy and well-balanced diet that contains the five food groups are known for playing a role when it comes to managing stress and anxiety levels. It is tempting to reach for snacks and take-aways or alcohol that are considered comfort food, but an excess of these can end up leaving you worse off.

Stay on the move

Physical exercise does not only release feel-good hormones in the form of endorphins, but it is also known as one of the effective ways to improve your mental health. Choose a form of physical exercise that you will enjoy and remember to switch things up to avoid a routine. Physical activities such as dance fitness, yoga, or the simple act of going for a weekend way can help manage stress levels.

These may just be starting points on taking care of your mental health, but above all else it is crucial to know when to reach out for help. Knowing that you are not alone and that there are people who are there to support you on your journey of taking care of your mental health can be one of the best things you can do.
