5 Tips to Save on Last-Minute Back to School Shopping
5 Tips to Save on Last-Minute Back to School Shopping
10 Jan 2022

With just a few more days left for schools to open, there is still time to do some last-minute shopping that doesn't see you breaking your budget.

Knowing where to look and planning your shopping can help you save. Spreading your shopping over the school year for items that are not as pressing can also help you tap into good deals that will see you saving. Here is what you need to know.

Be a smart shopper

Back-to-school deals are available at most major retailers and online. It's all about planning your shopping by doing your research before making a purchase. Retailers base their prices on demand, which means you are more likely to pay more for an item when schools are about to open than later on in the year. If there are items on your child's list that can be bought later, plan for it by shopping a few weeks later when there are many back to school items that will be put on clearance or discounted.

Sign-up for specials
Take out the leg work and save some time by signing up for online deals. You can sign up for notifications from major retailers such as CNA, Checkers or Pick n Pay on deals that will help you save. Keep in mind to also have a look at second hand stores that will have items such as books that are still in mint condition.

Take inventory
The back-to-school rush can leave some parents overwhelmed as they prepare to get their children ready for the school year. It can also see parents making the common mistake of buying the same item two or even three times. Avoid purchasing what is already at home by taking inventory of items from the previous year and items that you have already purchased. Having a list can keep you on track and also make shopping easier.

Buy in bulk
Basic items that tend to get used up quickly or lost can be bought in bulk. Things such as pencils, pens, glue sticks and notebooks are some of the items to consider buying in bulk. Keep in mind that buying in bulk gives you access to discounted prices. It also saves you plenty of trips to the store to stock up on items.

Start planning for next school year
Yes, you can plan for the next year to help you save and keep the stress of preparing for the new school year at bay. Having a general idea of items that are requested by the school each year can be useful when it comes to shopping for items that you can add to the new school list. Remember to keep quality than quantity in mind to avoid having to replace items frequently.
