What to Expect When Getting Your First Mammogram
What to Expect When Getting Your First Mammogram
18 Oct 2022

A trip to the doctor may not be the most exciting thing that we look forward to, even more so when it comes to the annual mammogram check-ups women have to do when it comes to breast cancer screening.

However, the process is less daunting as it may sound and can come in handy when it comes to early detection of breast cancer.

What is it?

A mammogram test is an X-ray of the breast that uses radiation to screen and diagnose cancerous lumps found in the breast. One of the myths is that mammograms cause breast cancer, but this is false as the machine produces a limited amount of radiation.

What happens & how long will it take?

You will have to undress above the waist, but you will be given a gown to cover yourself from behind.  A technologist or doctor will position your breasts for the mammogram. Your breast will then be compressed by a plastic plate that moves down onto the breasts for a few seconds. This allows the radiologist to see more detail of the breast and decrease the amount of radiation during the procedure. The procedure will take about 20 minutes.

Will it be painful?

The thought of having your breasts placed into a machine and waiting for the results that could possibly change your life is something that most women find daunting. However, understanding the process of what to expect when going for a mammogram can make the experience less daunting.

The fact is that it could feel uncomfortable, but it is something that you will not notice as the procedure continues.  Should you feel any pain during the procedure, inform your doctor or technician.

Is it worth doing?

Mammogram tests form a crucial part of yearly check-ups to help you detect life changing illness while it is still early and treatable. According to World Health Organisation (WHO), a mammogram has proven to reduce breast cancer mortality by approximately 20%. Although mammograms are recommended for people for women 40 years and older, there are narrow benefits compared to harms for both younger and older women.

Can it cure cancer?

This is a screening test and is not done to cure you of cancer. The breast is placed on a plate and compressed by a Perspex plate to spread the breast tissues to detect any abnormalities in the breast. Should your doctor or GP find any abnormalities, you could be requested to come in for a diagnostic mammogram to determine if it is cancerous.

We may not have control over every outcome of life and our health but staying prepared for life's unexpected moments can be beneficial. Having things such as a life insurance policy in place or going for regular screenings that are offered by medical professionals or free screenings from organisations such as the Pink Drive to help you be more prepared.
