Freedom Day – celebrated on the 27th of April – is coming up! While everyone loves a public holiday it’s important to understand it’s powerful place in South African history.
What is Freedom Day?
Freedom Day marks the anniversary of the country's first democratic elections, held on April 27, 1994. On this day, all South Africans celebrated their difficult journey to freedom, the end of the apartheid regime and the power to vote, regardless of race.
On the first commemoration of this national holiday, our former president, Nelson Mandela, addressed South Africa’s parliament saying Freedom Day was a time to
be reminded of our “terrible past” but also focus on the brightness of the beckoning future. “Wherever South Africans are across the globe, our hearts beat as one, as we renew our common loyalty to our country and our commitment to its future.”
How Will You Celebrate?
Most South Africans appreciate any public holiday as a time to relax with their family or friends. Still, it’s important to use this day as a reminder of our incredible potential for positive change. It’s because of this that many use the holiday as a chance to give back to their communities and contribute in a way that can help us progress as a nation.
Ways To Give Back
While we’ve come a long way, South Africa is still held back by many problems such as poverty and a lack of education. You don’t have to look too hard to find ways to assist. Consider using the day to declutter your home and donate anything you’re not using to charities, children’s homes and underprivileged schools. Your unwanted furniture, clothes, blankets, books and toys are only contributing to clutter but can make a big difference to those in need.
Alternatively, you could create a food hamper for a struggling family or make a quick online donation to a charity of your choice.
Freedom To Choose
The great thing about Freedom Day is that you have the freedom to choose how you want to celebrate it. Whether you use your time to enjoy your loved ones or find a way to pay it forward, the decision is up to you. But please do take a moment to appreciate our country’s incredible progress. Despite our problems, we have come a long way – and it’s a testament to the resilience of our rainbow nation’s people.
Happy Freedom Day!
