Social media has revolutionized the way we interact with each other, but it’s not necessarily for the better. Studies have shown that our online activities can have a significant impact on our state of mind. That's why, if we want our online experience to be a positive one, we need to play our part in promoting kindness and positivity.
Think Before You Post
If you wouldn't say it to someone's face, do you really want to write it on their Facebook page? Also, before you hit post, ask yourself if your comment is necessary or contributing helpfully or positively. While it only takes a few seconds to digitally slam someone because you disagree with their opinion, make a negative comment about their appearance or leave a 1-star review for the restaurant that forget to serve your sauce on the side, your words could live online forever.
As for the consequences, these could range from hurting people's feelings to destroying businesses. Do you really need to be the purveyor of that kind of negativity? In this instance, that old adage "if you don't have anything nice to say, rather keep it to yourself" is probably the best advice you can take.
Pick Your battles
If your neighbour is continually parking in your driveway, you might want to have a conversation about it. But if a stranger on the internet has dared to voice an opinion you disagree with, do you really have to engage in an online brawl? Aside from raising your blood pressure and wasting your time, what do you stand to gain by forcing your viewpoint – be it right or wrong – onto someone who isn't relevant to you? Real life will always be full of unpleasant but necessary conflict so if you can spare yourself a digital dual by simply scrolling on by, then you're already winning.
Engage Positively
Clearly, there's a lot you don't want to say or do online. Making inappropriate jokes is not cool and could even cost you your job. Posting hurtful remarks is just mean. Sharing negative news and views with no way to verify their authenticity is just enabling scaremongering and fake news. But this doesn't mean you shouldn't engage – just do so mindfully and positively. For example, if you think your friend's new profile pic is fabulous, tell them. If that new family-run coffee shop makes the best cappuccino on the block, be sure to post about it. When you choose kindness over negativity, share uplifting stories and use your platform to raise awareness for important causes, you'll contribute to creating a more uplifting online space. Remember, the streets you build on the internet on the same ones you’ll have to walk on. Digitally, of course.
Hit The Like Button
It's easy to get sucked into a, long mindless scroll through all your social media apps but are you actually “liking” anything? When you hit the like button, the app's algorithm starts to kick in. You’ll then be shown even more of the content you enjoy, be it adorable dogs or quick and easy salad recipes. But more than that, when you hit the like button, you're giving the content creator a thumbs up. This type of validation can make someone's day as well as encourage them to post more of what makes you happy, so it's a win-win. Also, if you have a compliment or something positive to say, take the time to do it. Kindness is contagious, and your positive actions can inspire others to do the same.
Remember, being a kind social media user is just as important as being considerate of others in real life. By thinking before you post, avoiding negativity and simply hitting the like button, you can play your part in creating a positive online environment that everyone can enjoy – including yourself!
