Fun Ways To Enjoy The Easter Holidays On A Budget
03 Apr 2023

The Easter holidays is a great time to relax and enjoy yourself with family and friends. However, if you’re bored of braaiing and enjoy being on the go, it can get expensive. Happily, South Africa is a beautiful and exciting country with loads of interesting things to do and, if you plan carefully, you can create a wonderful Easter itinerary – without breaking the bank!

Head To The Beach
If you’re lucky enough to live in one of South Africa’s coastal regions, Easter is a fun and festive time to head to the beach. To make a day of it, be sure to pack an umbrella so that you’re not constantly exposed to the sun – remember, sunscreen is your friend – and pack a delicious picnic lunch.

Speaking of picnics…
You don’t have to be near a beach to enjoy the day outdoors. South Africa has lots of beauty spots for an al fresco lunch with the friends. In Cape Town, the Kirstenbosch Botanical Gardens is one of the most beautiful in the world while the Walter Sisulu Botanical Garden in Jozi features walking trails and an Instagram-worthy waterfall.

Take a hike!
A hike is a brilliant way to burn off those marshmallow eggs and, thanks to an abundance of trails, you’ll find something to suit your groups fitness level. Choose a leisurely stroll through the picture pretty Westville Eco Trail near Durban (it takes around 40 minutes to complete) or challenge yourself to a trek to the top of Lion’s Head in Cape Town. The views are worth the workout!

Get creative
Rain ruining your plans? Channel your inner artist! At Clay Café, you can choose from a range of ceramics, paint it using their art supplies and get it glazed to perfection. You could also try your hand at Art Jamming, now in Cape Town, Somerset West and Jozi. Choose your canvas size, pick out your materials and create your own masterpiece from as little as R160.

Movies – with a twist
Netflix is great, but it’s always good to get off the couch and enjoy an experience. If you’re in Cape Town, head to the Galileo open air theatre at the V&A Waterfront. In Jozi? You’ll want to know about Molly Malone’s Roadhouse Drive-In in Sandton. Their milkshakes are not to be missed!

Plan a treasure hunt
Hunting for easter eggs is fun – but make your family work for it. Planning a treasure hunt at home is easy. Simply hide your treats and create a series of clues leading from one to the next. They can be as easy as “You’ll find this one is hiding in dad’s favourite spot” or cryptic. Think “I welcome all guests, but don’t say a word…” (Yep, it’s under the welcome mat!)

Whatever you choose to do, we hope your Easter holidays are relaxing, safe and fun!
