Does financial stress keep you up at night? Here’s how life insurance can help improve the quality of your sleep and your health.
It's World Sleep Day on the 15th of March. While you might think the best way to celebrate is to get a good night’s sleep, for the many of us struggling with stress, it’s not that easy. There are hundreds of studies that prove that worrying is one of the main causes of insomnia. Also, many of them indicate that a particular type of anxiety – worrying about money – is the chief thief of the hours we could be dreaming.
Money worries wreck your sleep and your health
According to a recent survey performed by The Sleep Foundation, 77% of participants revealed they lose sleep due to financial stress and 41% of that group say these concerns are chronic. This is where another issue comes in – constantly worrying about money and not getting enough sleep becomes a vicious cycle as well as the perfect storm to create a health crisis.
Countless studies show that those who regularly toss and turn are at a higher risk of developing high blood pressure, heart disease, diabetes, major depression and dementia. A lack of sleep is also proven to lower your immune system making you much more likely to catch a cold or that flu going around the office and even develop auto immune conditions like lupus and rheumatoid arthritis.
You owe it to yourself to break the cycle
There are lots of reasons to improve the quality of your sleep, from improved health to simply wanting to wake up feeling refreshed so you can make the most out of your day. But if you’re constantly worrying about finances it could feel like an uphill battle and you may even end up financially worse off if you develop an expensive health condition as a result.
To break the cycle, start at the root of the problem and prioritise mastering your money. Everyone’s situation is different so your roadmap to financial security will be unique. Perhaps your focus will be to get a handle on your debt. Maybe you’ll want to chat with a financial advisor on how to create a hardworking budget or the best way to invest. Either way, know that working towards feeling like you have more control over your money matters could pay off with improved sleep as well as reward you with better health.
