Bridgerton (Season 3) on Netflix
The return of Bridgerton is set to be the crown jewel of binge-worthy winter viewing. Set in the lavish world of Regency-era London, the series follows the lives of the aristocratic Bridgerton family as they navigate love, scandal, and societal expectations. “Sneak peeks” tell us that Collin Bridgerton, the object of Penelope’s affection (who’s been revealed as the gossipy narrator, “Lady Whistledown”) might take their friendship to another level and the show’s creator, Shonda Rhimes seems to hint at that too. “Usually, we’re meeting a new person who’s falling in love with one of our regulars,” says Rhimes. “But this time, we know the people who are falling in love.”
Queen Modjadji on Mzansi Magic on DStv
The reign is coming! From the creators of Shaka ilemba, Queen Modjadi promises to be another magnificently shot, unmissable African epic. It tells the legendary tale of Modjadji, “The Rain Queen”, the hereditary ruling monarch for the Balobedu people in Limpopo, believed to have a sacred ability to make it rain. As this power is passed on from generation to generation and the tale spans over 400 years, the cast features a slew of local talent including Ngelekanyo Ramulondi who plays one of the young rain queens. She’ll be sharing the screen with two real-life homegrown “queens”, Shudufhadzo Musida and Ndavi Nokeri, both former Miss South Africa title holders.
True Detective: Night Country (Season 4) on Showmax
Love a good mystery? Prepare for a gripping journey into the heart of rural Alaska with two-time Oscar winner Jodie Foster playing detective in an eerie small town haunted by dark secrets. True Detective: Night Country delves deep into the murky depths of human nature, exploring the complexities of guilt, redemption, and the age-old struggle between good and evil. With atmospheric cinematography, stellar performances and a storyline full of twists, it’s a must-watch for fans of crime dramas and psychological thrillers. Better yet, as each True Detective season stands alone, you won’t have to have watched the previous three to dive right in.
Empini: Season 1 on Showmax
Set in the dangerous world of the private security industry, this proudly South African production is a 52-part action-drama that promises to get your adrenaline going. It stars award-winning actors Siyabonga Thwala, who plays a ruthless businessman and political figure, and Nambitha Ben-Mazwi, as a deeply troubled security guard in search of answers. Ben-Mazwi says it’s been one of her most physically demanding roles to date and is grateful to have two-years of muay thai (Thai boxing) training under her belt that has helped her bring her character to life. When you consider that “Empini” is Zulu for “in the war”, you can brace yourself for some serious edge-of-your-seat action.
